First!

Bragging that you’re first in the comment section of a blog post just means that you acknowledge you have no life outside of said blog.

Go read a book. Or do your homework.

I gotta start being proud of myself, and stop being so hard on myself.

Want to pass an unforgettable night?

— Posted by Leshka at 9:41 pm

I got a spam e-mail at work with the subject “Want to pass an unforgettable night?”

Now is that like making the best fart of your life? Or how about finally getting rid of that kidney stone you’ve had for a month? Maybe I get to collect $200?

I’ll pass this unforgettable night and go straight into the forgettable one, thanks.

It’s that time again…

Well, after my last post was Halloween, then I was sick for three weeks, then Thanksgiving, and now work is super busy. And I couldn’t think of anything nice to say. There’s so much I don’t like about this time of year - the extra helping of tourists, the commercialism of X-mas and the insistence on calling it Christmas (as if Jesus was born for you to SAVE BIG!), the cold, the dark, the snow that oh-so-quickly turns into slush, shall I go on?

So I’m here to urge all of my 5 readers to relax this season and remember what’s important to you in your life. Is it family? Try to spend time with them, or at least give them a good long distance phone call. Friends? Go have a group dinner at a fancy restaurant and splurge. You’ve been pinching every penny all year long. Dress up and act like real adults!

Don’t feel the need to give everyone you’ve ever met expensive, stress-inducing gifts. Believe me, if your friends or family are slighted by not getting a Gucci gift (even if you got one,) there are some issues there that should be dealt with. Or how about this? Give the gift of time. Some people just want a shoulder to lean on and an ear to hear them. Give the gift of service. Cook a meal, babysit the kids for free, clean an apartment. Give the gift of handmade items. Cards, a scrap book, a shirt you made yourself!

Still really want to give gifts that cost $$? Support local stores, smaller organizations and companies that use recycled goods (it’s so easy to do! I did it last year with no problem!) And if you still want to shell out the big bucks or look like you have money to burn, give to people who really need it. Buy a bunch of food and give it to food pantries or any of the homeless people you see everywhere these days. Give your clothes away to any number of thrift stores. Donate money to endless charities (you may have to do a little research in the beginning, but then you can donate to these year after year.)

So to relieve the stress that inevitably happens every December, relax and do what you WANT to do, not what you feel you HAVE to do. And don’t make excuses to others for your choices! There are too many things in life to stress over - the holidays shouldn’t be on the top of that list.

Some links for awesome gifts/great donations:

e ko logic - pricey, but excellent clothing
Keith Knight - I love his work on his two comic strips, The K Chronicles and (th)ink. And he’s in a band!
Recycled Plastic Products Directory - American Chemistry has a HUGE list of websites that offer recycled products.
Oxfam - you can donate for a specific project or for general purposes. Last year, they used 79% of all donations for programs.
Charity Navigator - they have a lock on charities all over the US
Good Search - donate money to a charity of your choice, just by searching the web! Uses the Yahoo search engine.
Habitat For Humanity - multiple chapters in all states. Jimmy Carter swears by it.
