A conundrum
I was shopping with Adam at Syms. If you don’t mind that most of the suits there make you look like you stepped out of the 50′s, it’s actually not a bad place. Of course, as usually happens when I go shopping with Adam, I end up buying more stuff than he does. I got a sports coat, three ties, and a pair of brown shoes (yes, I wear men’s clothing.)
So we’re in the shoe section. I’ve been looking for a pair of men’s brown shoes for a while, but was never able to find something I liked. While finding just the right pair of shoes, I found a pair of boots that would have been pretty cool had I wanted a pair of men’s black boots. Syms always puts the national average price as well as their price on all their clothing, so I knew that most places would price this pair of boots at around $75.
A pair of comparable boots for a woman at a regular store in NYC (not a discount place like Payless) would start around $80. I know because I was trying to find a pair not too long ago. So women are supposed to spend more for roughly the same pair of boots. And we’re supposed to change them every season, and we’re supposed to have a different pair for every outfit we own.
And at best, the average woman’s salary is 83% of the average man’s salary for the same job.

Good for you—wearing what you LIKE and speaking out about costs and incomes I was expecting a post about San Francisco

Apparently some of the discrepencies in the cost of men’s and women’s clothing is actually built into our tariff structure b/c there are different tarriffs for men’s and for women’s clothing (not always higher for women, interestingly).

Yeah, I remember reading about that in another article (I want to say the NY Times, but I’m not sure). It’s absolutely ridiculous that there should be such a discrepancy for any of that.
BTW, nice to hear from you!
