Red tape at it’s best
January 1, 2004 – After a night of partying, I left my wallet in a taxi, losing my ID, a couple of credit cards, and my Social Security card. I was annoyed that I would have to replace everything, but I was bummed about losing my wallet. I really loved that wallet…
July 13, 2004 – I finally go to the DMV to replace my learner’s permit. I had a passport during this interval, so I felt no huge rush to get my ID replaced.
July 19, 2005 – My learner’s permit expiry date comes and goes while I’m on vacation. The DMV neglected to let me know, and since I got a replacement just a year ago, I didn’t remember that I needed a new one so soon.
November 10, 2005 – I take the day off because I needed some sleep and I was going to spend the day at the DMV to get a State ID. I don’t need to drive in NYC, so why should I go through the process of taking the written test? I looked at the DMV website and it said that for a State ID I need a Social Security card – NO SUBSTITUTIONS! Okay, I thought. I’ll try to get an ID card, but if I can’t, I’ll fill out a form to get a new learner’s permit. Unless I missed something, the website said that if you’ve already given the DMV a Social Security number, you don’t need a card. I would just need to take the test again. Then, if there’s time, I’ll walk over to the SS office and apply for a replacement card.
***To get any ID from the DMV, you need a Social Security card. To get a Social Security card, you need a valid ID card from the DMV. You can also supply a passport, which I did, but guess what? To get a passport you need a valid ID from the DMV.***
So I now have a receipt for my SS card, which should come while I’m out of town Thanksgiving week. I have a doctor’s appointment shortly after, so I’ll take more time off of work, go to the DMV that morning and explain my high blood pressure to the doctor that afternoon.
BTW, I sent off letters to both the mayor and public advocate via snail mail this morning. I figure that would look better than whipping off e-mails…

‘Official’ government rigamarole is terribly maddening and SO insurmountable—one of life’s sad lessons
